Methodology: Choosing an Organization
It All Begins Here
Throughout my college career, I have used Trader Joe’s as a case study for nearly every class that required it. I had worked at Trader Joe’s since freshman year, and held several leadership roles within the organization.
Choosing this organization has been incredibly helpful in real-world applications of leadership and project management fundamental processes. In each class I have taken, I have used my research to further my career advancement within the Trader Joe’s organization, and have seen first-hand the difference in organizational processes. The store has been my “sandbox” for OGL thought projects and studies.
I chose Trader Joe’s as my organization for this class, because I had recently transitioned into a new role, and could now view the TJ’s organization without being within the company itself. Using the last three years of knowledge, it felt natural to choose this organization for the final project of my undergraduate career.
Trader Joe’s is a national grocery store chain, founded in Pasadena, California in 1967. Since its inception, the Trader Joe’s company has undergone several corporate restructurings, culture changes, and growth. Currently, there are over 600 locations in 43 states, with plans for expansion in 2026 to include an additional 21 stores (Trader Joe’s, 2026). Trader Joe’s has positioned itself strategically within the grocery industry, boasting unbeatable employee culture, unique social media strategies, and ruthless pricing negotiation through the use of private labeling on over 85% of products (Reiner, 2024).
Trader Joe’s has an interesting corporate structure, with nearly all daily store decisions and processes being spearheaded by Crew members, with Mates (managers) and Captains (store general manager) taking on more coaching-like roles within the store setting. Trader Joe’s has a set guideline for culture, including specific points like Kaizen, or the process of constant improvement through innovation. In the Trader Joe’s world, crew members run the store.
